Song of the Week: California Paradise

Written by: Kim Fowley, Joan Jett, Kari Krome, and Sandy West
Appeared on: Queens of Noise
Lead Vocal: Cherie Currie

Turn up that radio
Hear the rock and roll
Malibu shines like summer gold
Wild beaches
In the salty wind
California summers never end

California - you’re so nice
California - your paradise

The kids are ripping up the streets
In their super cars
All night parties and loud guitars
Hot hot neighbourhoods
Its the silver sound
Wicked hollywood goes round and round

California - you’re so nice
California - your paradise

Honestly, Cherie and Lita take the lead for me. Cherie's vocals overpower everything except Lita's crazy good guitar riffs. It's definitely one of my favorite Runaways songs.

Like I said, it's one of my favorite Runaways songs. I'd say this is Cherie's signature song, after "Cherry Bomb" of course. She hits all the notes perfectly, and always seems to have a lot of fun with it in performances. In the video I linked to below, the Live in Japan performance, Cherie literally goes wild. She swings the microphone cord, like, an insane amount of times and jumps around a lot. Good stuff.

Joan's Thoughts: It always starts out the set on the tour. It's about the state we live in and how nice it is.
Kim's Thoughts: The answer to "California Girls" by the Beach Boys although musically it resembles a Gary Glitter record.

Great great great song from all angles. I definitely think it's Cherie's best vocal performance. Joan's one little harmony vocal over the "California" is what I like the most though. As well as her guitar solo :)

Love this song
I really like this song, it tells us in song form of what living in Cailfornia was like.
